The Cross In The Sand…It Did Happen

August 18, 2008

But did it happen to John McCain?  He told the beautiful story Saturday night about the prison guard with whom he had a religious moment:

ALL OF A SUDDEN THE DOOR OF THE CELL OPENED, THE GUARD CAME IN, A GUY WHO WAS JUST WHAT WE CALL A GUN GUARD. HE JUST WALKED AROUND THE CAMP WITH A GUN ON HIS
SHOULDER. HE WENT LIKE THIS AND THEN HE LOOSENED THE ROPES. HE CAME BACK ABOUT FOUR HOURS LATER, HE TIGHTENED THEM UP AGAIN AND LEFT. THE FOLLOWING CHRISTMAS, BECAUSE IT WAS CHRISTMAS DAY, WE WERE ALLOWED TO STAND OUTSIDE OF OUR CELL FOR A FEW MINUTES, AND THOSE DAYS WE WERE NOT ALLOWED TO SEE OR COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER ALTHOUGH WE CERTAINLY DID. AND I WAS STANDING OUTSIDE FOR MY FEW MINUTES, OUTSIDE MY CELL. HE CAME WALKING UP. HE STOOD THERE FOR A MINUTE AND WITH HIS HANDLE ON THE DIRT IN THE COURTYARD HE DREW A CROSS AND HE STOOD THERE AND A MINUTE AND WITH HIS HANDLE ON THE DIRT IN THE COURTYARD HE DREW A CROSS AND HE STOOD THERE AND A MINUTE. LATER, HE RUBBED IT OUT AND WALKED AWAY. FOR A MINUTE THERE, THERE WAS JUST TWO CHRISTIANS WORSHIPING TOGETHER. I’LL NEVER FORGET THAT MOMENT.

Recounting his experiences in 1973 for US News and World Report, in a 12,000 word story, McCain didn’t tell this very moving one.  And it just so happens that Alexander Solzhenitsyn told a very similar story in his 1973 book The Gulag Archipelago.  And, as it turns out, McCain has written glowingly about the work of Solzhenitsyn.

I’m just sayn’…

  1. And because McCain was treated so humanely it would never occur to him that the actions of this guard might be a psychological ploy.

  2. If you’ll remember, in the closing days of his administration Ronald Reagan was telling heroic “real life” stories of WW2 only to see it eventually revealed that he’d lifted the stories from old movies. Reagan was confusing WW2 movies with real life.

    Reagan also had Alzheimers.

    I’m just sayin’ ……..

  3. Our Obama, who art from heaven, or Hawaii, or possibly Chicago,

    Liberal be thy name,

    Thy presidency come,

    Thy will be done,

On Earth, as it is in San Francisco.

Give us this day our daily handouts.

    And forgive us our individualism,

As we forgive those who don’t properly inflate their tires.

And lead us not into the Clintons,

    But deliver us from McCain

    For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

    for two full terms.

    Conservative be thy name,

    Thy presidency came,

    Thy will was done,

On Earth, as it is in Houston.

Give us this day our daily corporate handouts.

    And forgive us our individualism,

As we forgive those who don’t properly inflate their stock portfolios.

And lead us not into the Clintons,

    But deliver us from Obama

    For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

    for two full terms.

  5. Who said what?
As is by now apparent, Barack Obama and his crack team of foreign policy experts have proven themselves totally tone-deaf when it comes to understanding the American people and their views toward the rest of the world. His campaign’s strategy to convince voters that the way to win their hearts is to cozy up to those who hold them in disdain has resulted in a dip in his poll numbers.

So, having failed to impress any of those who have not already succumbed to the constant Obama-beat of the mainstream media, Barry and the boys have decided to tackle the energy crisis. Their grand plan predictably calls for a reduction in consumption, government investment into the development of alternative fuels and windfall profit taxes on the evil oil companies. He has also lectured us on the need to turn down our thermostats and pay close attention to the air pressure in our tires.

Now, if all of this seems vaguely familiar, it should. Nearly 30 years ago, another Democrat tackled another energy crisis in eerily similar language. Up to now, only their foreign policy skills have been compared, but these two doves have much more in common than their woeful understanding of the Islamist threat.

So go and get your cardigan out of mothballs and take this little quiz, keeping in mind that the following quotes are taken from a single speech Obama made in Lansing, Michigan this week and one that Jimmy Carter delivered in July of 1979 to cheer the country during our “crisis of confidence.” Was it Barack Obama or Jimmy Carter who said:

    1) Our economy is in turmoil and our families are struggling with rising costs and falling incomes; with lost jobs and lost homes and lost faith in the American Dream.

    2) We’ve always had a faith that the days of our children would be better than our own. Our people are losing that faith, not only in government itself but in the ability as citizens to serve as the ultimate rulers and shapers of our democracy.

    3) In little more than two decades we’ve gone from a position of energy independence to one in which almost half the oil we use comes from foreign countries, at prices that are going through the roof.

    4) Back then, we imported about a third of our oil. Now, we import more than half.

    5) Will we allow ourselves to be held hostage to the whims of tyrants and dictators who control the world’s oil wells?

    6) Our excessive dependence on OPEC has already taken a tremendous toll on our economy and our people.

    7) These efforts will cost money, a lot of money, and that is why Congress must enact the windfall profits tax without delay. It will be money well spent. Unlike the billions of dollars that we ship to foreign countries to pay for foreign oil, these funds will be paid by Americans to Americans.

    8) I believe we should immediately give every working family in America a $1,000 energy rebate, and we should pay for it with part of the record profits that the oil companies are making right now.

    9) In just ten years, these steps will produce enough renewable energy to replace all the oil we import from the Middle East.

    10) I am tonight setting the further goal of cutting our dependence on foreign oil by one-half by the end of the next decade.

    11) Think about how World War II forced us to transform a peacetime economy still climbing out of Depression into an Arsenal of Democracy that could wage war across three continents.

    12) Just as a similar synthetic rubber corporation helped us win World War II, so will we mobilize American determination and ability to win the energy war.

    13) I’ll also extend the Production Tax Credit for five years to encourage the production of renewable energy like wind power, solar power, and geothermal energy.

    14) I am asking for the most massive peacetime commitment of funds and resources in our nation’s history to develop America’s own alternative sources of fuel — from coal, from oil shale, from plant products for gasohol, from unconventional gas, from the sun.

    15) Think about when the scientists and engineers told John F. Kennedy that they had no idea how to put a man on the moon, he told them they would find a way.

    16) We ourselves are the same Americans who just ten years ago put a man on the Moon.

    17) We will set a goal of making our new buildings 50 percent more efficient over the next four years.

    18) I’m asking Congress to mandate, to require as a matter of law, that our nation’s utility companies cut their massive use of oil by 50 percent within the next decade and switch to other fuels, especially coal, our most abundant energy source.

    19) And we’ll invest in the technology that will allow us to use more coal, America’s most abundant energy source…

    Answers: 1) Obama, 2) Carter, 3) Carter, 4) Obama, 5) Obama, 6) Carter, 7) Carter, 8) Obama, 9) Obama, 10) Carter, 11) Obama, 12) Carter, 13) Obama, 14) Carter, 15) Obama, 16) Carter, 17) Obama, 18) Carter, 19) Obama

So, how did you do? I’ll leave you with a no-brainer. Who did not say: “I will do my best, but I will not do it alone. Let your voice be heard. Whenever you have a chance, say something good about our country.”

  6. So what about BHO and his relationship to Ayers are they trying to hide now?

  7. McCain? Dishonest? Nooooooooooooooo.

  8. Carter? Obama? Broken Record. Broken Promises. NO of course not, they are Liberal.

  9. Hooter also thinks George Dubya is extremely intelligent (maybe even mensa intelligent!). Which is why he’s buckin’ for John “straight talk express” McCain, another brainiac who doesn’t know who we’re fighting in Iraq.

  10. I think McCain to be the lesser of two evils. BUT hey THANKS for telling me what I think as I am a Mensa member.

  11. Wow Alan that’s sinking REALLY LOW, to generate the concept that at his core, John McCain is the worst kind of liar.

I dont mind fact checking but this innuendo is an all time low point.

yikes maybe Ive given you too much credit for being intellectually honest? I thought you would bring up great points without the dishonesty, but this one is over the top more than the bus sinking one; that was simply wishing McCains bus would sink and kill everyone on board, or at the least a funny metaphor; but saying McCain is such a depraved liar that this incident from captivity was fake?

Alan I think you need to apologize and clarify what you meant to say

  12. You??? A mensa member??? And I’m the king of Siam.

  13. If you can’t trhink outside [YOUR] party, you are mindless. [or a liberal]!
About 3.5 more months of ripping apart 2 pieces of shyt, and we’ll be done.
President [whoever] we will be FUKCED!
Hilary dosen’t think he can win! LOL!

  14. “Ten senior Hess Corporation executives and/or members of the Hess family each gave $28,500 to the joint RNC-McCain fundraising committee, just days after McCain reversed himself to favor offshore drilling, according to Federal Election Commission reports.”

“A Hess office manager and her husband, an Amtrak worker, each chipped in $28,000 apiece, too.”

    http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/08/oil_company_executives.php

  15. Where in the above did Alan say that McCain is a depraved liar, Bradley?

  16. “I think McCain to be the lesser of two evils. BUT hey THANKS for telling me what I think as I am a Mensa member.”

I take back what I said. mAnn Coulter is mensa. I guess the smarter you are, the more detached from reality you become.

By the way, I also heard Hitler was mensa.

  17. in 1973 for US News and World Report, in a 12,000 word story, McCain didn’t tell this very moving one. And it just so happens that Alexander Solzhenitsyn told a very similar story in his 1973 book The Gulag Archipelago. And, as it turns out, McCain has written glowingly about the work of Solzhenitsyn.

TDro, McCain never told this story, even when he did the 12,000 word story in 1973; but guess what, Alexander S was the one this really happened to, McCain just used it to lie to all Christians to make it seem believeable.

    If you dont see the depth of Alan calling this account by McCain to be a copy of someone else’s book, saying it never happened to McCain while he was in POW camp, that McCain would lie about this kind of impressive event? there is no possible way anyone could tell a more contrasted lie;

for example, it was said of Bill Clinton that he would cheat on his golf score. Now if you dont know golf? that takes a monumental liar, your average liar wouldnt have the audacity or depravity to pull that off.

    but to recall days of being a prisoner of war and to say this very touching and special event, was a total fabrication? that blows away the lying on your golf score concept;

Im very suprised at Alan for suggesting McCain is such a liar, if Alan doesnt clarify and get McCain on the H&C show today and discuss this, every second that goes by is very damaging for Alans credibility

  18. I’m smarter than that… Mensa and a dollar fifty will get me a cup of coffee someplace. It means nothing. Comparing me to Hitler is embecile though.

  19. Oh dear.

Well, Ronald Reagan used to steal material from Walter Cronkite and Bob Hope, too, and that was just to amuse others– a far less important reason than pandering to fundamentalists and evangelicals in order to get elected.

I suppose Mr. McCain needs to do everything he can to keep today’s Religious Meanies from burning him at the stake. Shoot, just before he got nominated they’d had him tied up on a gas-soaked bier and were standing by with a cigarette lighter.

I sure felt sorry for him back then.

  20. McCain didn’t even serve. It’s all a conspiracy…

  21. after reading some of these comments, the USA will go down FAST if a liberal gets elected. bad enough what pelosi is doing

  22. “…it was said of Bill Clinton that he would cheat on his golf score. Now if you dont know golf? that takes a monumental liar…”

Well, maybe you play at the exclusive private clubs, where they still have private caddies, but out on the public links if you’re not cheating on your score then you’re invoking all kinds of special rules that the USGA has yet to enshrine in the Rules of Golf.

So the golfing standard for lying cuts about as much bait as “the one that got away” fisherman’s standard.

“…this very touching and special event, was a total fabrication?”

I wouldn’t say McCain’s lying. I’d say he’s delusional. Like when really old people sit back in the rocking chair and reflect on the “good old days”.

  23. Are you saying that Solzhenitsyn may have paraphrased an anecdote he heard from John McCain, after McCain’s release? Such a cheap shot at a dead writer…

  24. Hooter:
I did not compare you to Hitler, I was simply making an observation.

    Bradley:
Alan did not call McCain a liar. You just assumed he implied it. Like he said at the end of his post, “I’m just sayin’”. It sounded to me like he was making an observation.

  25. McBu$h is a scumbag warmonger! How does this guy float to the top of the Republican pile? Bottom of his class (hmmm, sounds familiar) at the academy, crashed 4 aircraft (not much of a pilot (sounds familiar) but somehow a war hero because he got shot down while dropping bombs on civilians), made countless propaganda clips for the enemy during his stay in Vietnam…known flip flopper and lier…ond on and on and on!

    Man, shit really does float!

  26. Did you know:
1… that thanks to a provision in tax law demanded by liberals in Congress-President Bush’s tax relief packages of 2001 and 2003 are set to expire, resulting in what the Wall Street Journal describes as “the biggest tax increase in our nations history”
2… that if Pres. Bush’s tax cuts expire, the American people will face an overall tax hike of almost $2.4 trillion.
3… that more than 8 million jobs were created after Pres. Bush signed into law the second round of historic tax cuts in 2003, and that almost 6 million additional jobs could be created over the next decade by making permanent the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003
4…that if the Liberals who now control Congress succeed in revoking President Bush’s tax cuts, 42 million American families with children will see an average tax hike of $2,084.
5…that Americans pay an estimated 35 to 40% of their earnings each year in federal taxes.
6…that if Pres. Bush’s tax cuts expire, 17 million American seniors will be hit with an average tax increase of $2,034
7…that if Pres. Bush’s 2001 tax cuts are not made permanent, 26 million small business owners will face an average tax increase of $3,637
8…that Nancy Pelosi and the libs who now control Congress want to reinstate the Death Tax-The Death Tax would increase taxes by $91 billion.
9…that Pres. Bush’s first tax releif package provided Americans with accros the board tax rate cuts that are set to expire. If these tax rate cuts are not made permanent, families will face a tax increase of as much as 100%
10…that by repealing the tax cuts or 2001 and 2003, liberals in Congress would reinstate the Marriage Penalty that forces married couples to pay higher taxes than single taxpayers.

Do you want more of your hard earned money in your pocket or someone else’s?????????

Be careful who you vote for in November…

  27. @did you know…..don’t waste your time on these people ,,, they are stuck in hate mode because their savior is sinking fast.

  28. Bradley:
Alan did not call McCain a liar. You just assumed he implied it. Like he said at the end of his post, “I’m just sayin’”. It sounded to me like he was making an observation.

TDro, why cant you admit it when its true? Alan is calling the story fabricated, meaning McCain is a liar…

and he knows it sounds controversial because he even says ‘Im just sayin’

it isnt put into the context of lets check this out, its Alan Colmes who is an expert in current events, right? whose job is to evaluate, study and interact with the top experts on earth regarding current events. Alan gets to meet with and talk to important people wearing suits, kings, queens, royalty. So Alan is different because his job is to be informed more than the rest of us, we dont have to study everything we turn to experts and see how they call the plays, like an umpire.

Alan looked at the cross in the sand story and said, for the record, its a lie, McCain is a liar, I cannot prove it but its what I absolutely believe to be the case, and I, Alan Colmes, say that the story is a plagiarized copy of something written by somebody else.

Some posts here even say McCain is just a demented old fool who cant even remember it wasnt his story.

This is the gold that Alan went for, as an expert he knew that if spun this way, his expert opinion would manifest itself in public discussion and discourse to accuse McCain of being a liar and of being old and senile, without saying old, liar or senile and without requiring any objective proof. Im just sayin…

To say Alan isnt calling McCain a liar? you liberals are such hypocrites, its like you would toss a coin, slap it, and then say its both heads and tails.

  29. Did you know???? that Did you know???? is full of bolony????

  30. To make your point look intelligent, you need to learn how to spell BOLOGNA. Nah, Forget it….

  31. Fabricate
Etymology: Middle English, from Latin fabricatus, past participle of fabricari, from fabrica
    Date: 15th century
1 a: invent, create b: to make up for the purpose of deception
2: construct, manufacture; specifically : to construct from diverse and usually standardized parts

NAH Alan, That don’t sound a bit like you are calling anyone a liar.
    Do you have any evidence?

  32. I take back what I said. mAnn Coulter is mensa. I guess the smarter you are, the more detached from reality you become.

By the way, I also heard Hitler was mensa.

by TDro August 18, 2008 at 5:29 pm

There IS a comparison of myself to Hitler here..
There is even an implication that TDro is smarter than any Mensa member that leans toward the right. TDro: You are not God’s gift to the world. You are not the world’s gift of logic. You show your A$$ on here day after day and twist your own words when the situation fits. You twist others words constantly. You are very typical and make a very good illustration of what is wrong with Liberal Logic. It does not exist.

  33. Hooter:
Once again, I did NOT compare you to Hitler. This is what the conservatives do. If you want to believe that, there’s nothing I can do about it.

By the way, if I wanted to compare you to Hitler, I would say “Hooter is just like Hitler”. I’m not one, after all, to imply anything. So don’t go twisting my words to fit your interpretation.

Of course, twisting statements is part of the conservative agenda.

  34. Prove to me, in the statement above, where Alan called McCain a liar? I dare you.

  35. I guess in your case TDro…..Logic can’t even be taught.

  36. Bradley what else do “you liberals” do? Please keep enlightening us…

  37. Hitler wouldn’t like conservatives…

  38. By the way, all you have in innuendo and your perception of his statement. Okay, since you insist on playing that game, here’s my take.

Why, in the 1970’s when McCain wrote his memoirs, did he not mention that incident? I would think that something so profound would be ingrained in one’s memory. Why does it sound so similar to what Alexander Solzhenitsyn said in his book? Why did he suddenly “remember” it when AFTER he read Solzhenitsyn’s book?

And while we’re at it, he once said when he was in prison, he would recite the Green Bay Packers lineup to keep his sanity. Why did the lineup change to the Steelers when he was in Pittsburg?

McCain accused Obama of “wanting to lose a war to win an election”. Sounds to me like he’s accusing Obama of treason. Why would he accuse his opponent of treason?

I could go on and on.

It seems to me that either John McCain is senile or he’s lying. In any case, that makes him a poor candidate for president.

  39. And the parallels between Obama and Jimmy Carter make Obama THE candidate? I think NOT> Yes, TDro, We are playing the implication game and SO WAS ALAN when he composed this.
Maybe, just maybe you are starting to get it.

  40. Obama ~ Carter

    McCain ~ Harding

    Cindy McCain ~ Crypt Keeper

  41. Why I Will Not Vote for John McCain
    by Phillip Butler | March 27, 2008

“People often ask if I was a Prisoner of War with John McCain. My answer is always “No – John McCain was a POW with me.” The reason is I was there for 8 years and John got there 2 ½ years later, so he was a POW for 5 ½ years. And we have our own seniority system, based on time as a POW.

“I furthermore believe that having been a POW is no special qualification for being President of the United States. The two jobs are not the same, and POW experience is not, in my opinion, something I would look for in a presidential candidate.”

“John was awarded a Silver Star and Purple Heart for heroism and wounds in combat. This heroism has been played up in the press and in his various political campaigns. But it should be known that there were approximately 600 military POW’s in Vietnam. Among all of us, decorations awarded have recently been totaled to the following: Medals of Honor – 8, Service Crosses – 42, Silver Stars – 590, Bronze Stars – 958 and Purple Hearts – 1,249. John certainly performed courageously and well. But it must be remembered that he was one hero among many – not uniquely so as his campaigns would have people believe.”

  42. McCain is a Coward.

He questions Obama’s patriotism, then hides behind his service. His service that he routinely exaggerates about.

And we are supposed to respect this man?

He ridicules Obama for acting Presidential. Two weeks later, he’s interfering with American foreign policy by using harsher language than even the Bush Administration uses. In that, he actually makes Dubya look more competent. Which is unbelievable! He send Graham and Lieberman to Georgia as an acting Sec of Defense and Sec of State. Doing more sabre-rattling at the Russians. So who are going to war with when McCain is President? Iran, Russia, Pakistan? This man is starting to sound like more of a lunatic than Dubya.

The worst part is McCain probably isn’t completely behind his rambling, ever-changing policies and thoughts, but he has to keep it up to get these hateful kool-aid drinking cons to get behind him. That still hasn’t even happened.

Whine about Obama as much as you want. He will win. He will have a majority of Dems in both houses. Get used to it cons, you’re time is almost up…

  43. If someone respnds to my post negatively, can you at least come up with something new? Or are cons incapable of free thought? Can only read talking points and repeat…

  44. Hooter:
I don’t like games. Perhaps you can go to a conservative site and play with them.

  45. “I guess in your case TDro…..Logic can’t even be taught.”
by Hooter August 19, 2008 at 9:23 am

Whoa, a complete idiot calling me illogical. That’s a laugh!!

  46. Let’s not forget who REPUBLICANS THINK is the REAL SAVIOR: The REV. SUN MYUNG MOON! Found this nugget at CommonDreams.org:

…Reverend Moon has moved more and more into the political realm – from funding activities of both George H.W. Bush and his son George W. Bush, to funding the money-losing but politically activist Washington Times newspaper, to financially bailing out Jerry Falwell, to setting up numerous charities that now ask for federal funding…Moon, for example, was crowned by several members of Congress in the Senate Dirksen Office building on March 23, 2004. As the Washington Post noted in a July 21, 2007, story by Charles Babington, Moon himself proclaimed to our elected representatives attending the ceremony, “Emperors, kings and presidents . . . have declared to all Heaven and Earth that Reverend Sun Myung Moon is none other than humanity’s Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent.”

  47. “walk softly and carry a big stick” or was it that guy who hits me is a real big dick?

  48. Bologna: a cheap low grade meat product made from otherwise useless parts of animals.
Boloney: a low grade statement or opinion pretty much as described above.

  49. No. This story appears nowhere in anything Solzhenitsyn wrote. It does appear in McCain’s autobiography, published nine years ago.

I know you want so badly for McCain to be a liar like Obama, but some people have principles.
