I know how a lot of us love Thomas Frank, but I want to point everyone to an article that I saw in Harper’s a few weeks ago that he wrote. In it, he talked about how the Republican philosophy wasn’t conservatism as government, but rather conservatism as industry, using the treasury. It’s an excellent article, but I don’t know if it’s still available or if you have to pay for it now.

I’m kind of hoping that Washington ISN’T as corrupt as I think. The more I learn the more I worry. Does anyone else think that the timing of Russia’s invasion have something to do with the election? Am I starting to get paranoid?

Of course the Russian invasion was timed to correspond with the election. The president of Georgia is calling on John McCain (not George Bush, the current president, mind you) to intervene in this crisis, as if he’s already the president.
In other words, be very afraid because Russia is the new boogieman that might attack the U.S. And what better hero to protect us but John McCain?

I’m pro-choice, although I could never abort a baby, but this partial birth abortion is barbaric and I’m willing to watch that religious debate or whatever it is tomorrow cause I’d like to see Obama’s response to what he’s already voted yes to.

I’m totally tired of the games our government calls foreign policy. And not just GW, all of them for the last century. We train and provide weapons for foreign governments then don’t understand why their enemies get pissed at us??!! So, if right wingers want to strictly follow the constitution as written, we will let them own all of the cannon balls and muskets and bows and arrows they want. Even with their profound wisdom, our founding fathers could not have forseen automatic weapons, hand guns, atomic bombs. The arms some bear today are nothing like the ones of 200 years ago. They need to wake up.

We’ve had Mexican immigrants (legal & illegal) moving into Iowa & Missoui for over 20 years and this has not been a problem.
We have a huge Asian population in KC & Omaha. Also not a problem.
I do understand that some things may be different in states along the border.

I don’t mind legal immigrants. Play by the rules I say. It’s the types of illegals we’ve been getting these last few years. Not to mention that what few jobs left for laborers have been taken by those not here legally. It is a problem and them staying in their own little mexicos don’t change the fact that our tax dollars are spent on people that are not our citizens…both in the country and given away by our politicians to other countries.
We don’t have problems along the Canadian border because we share the same standard of living with them.
Canadians aren’t driven to jumping the border to escape grinding Canadian poverty. Canadians have a shot at decent jobs at home with a social safety net for the periods when they don’t have decent employment. We also (for the most part) share a common language with Canada. Eh?!
Mexico doesn’t (for the most part) share our standard of living.
Grinding Mexican poverty is driving their poorest north. The drug trade and Mexican government corruption only make it worse. If left unchecked, the mass migration north of Mexico’s poorest will bury us.
I’ve worked in California and Idaho with Mexican crews (legal and illegal) and generally they’re treated by their employers like they’re sub-human. Like they’re cheap and disposable.
